چکیده

Ocean thermal structure is critical for the intensity change of tropical cyclones (TCs). It has been operationally derived from satellite altimetry for TC forecasting and research. The existing derivation is, however, based on a simple two-layer method; as a result, only two isotherms can be obtained to coarsely characterize the subsurface ocean thermal structure. Improvement on the vertical resolution to enhance ocean characterization is desirable for more accurately estimating ocean’s energy supply for TC intensity

The Interaction of Supertyphoon Maemi (2003) with a Warm Ocean Eddy

Understanding the interaction of ocean eddies with tropical cyclones is critical for improving the understanding and prediction of the tropical cyclone intensity change. Here an investigation is presented of the interaction between Supertyphoon Maemi, the most intense tropical cyclone in 2003, and a warm ocean eddy in the western North Pacific. In September 2003, Maemi passed directly over a pr...

On Surface Wind Speed Retrieval from Sar Imagery in West Pacific Ocean

With the development of climate change and global warming, more and more severe tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons tend to emerge[nature], leading devastating threat and damage to human lives and social productions. Accurate forecasting of storm track and intensity is of vital importance to help evacuation and hence decrease losses. However, the accuracy of storm forecast heavily depends ...

Comparison of Typhoon Locations over Ocean Surface Observed by Various Satellite Sensors

In this study, typhoon eyes have been delineated using wavelet analysis from the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of ocean surface roughness and from the warm area at the cloud top in the infrared (IR) images, respectively. Envisat SAR imagery, and multi-functional transport satellite (MTSAT) and Feng Yun (FY)-2 Chinese meteorological satellite IR imagery were used to examine the typhoons ...

The Effect of the Ocean Eddy on Tropical Cyclone Intensity

It has been widely recognized that the ocean supplies surface heat fluxes and therefore energy to tropical cyclones (TCs). The TC can induce the sea surface temperature (SST) cooling (Price 1981) associated with both the entrainment/mixing and upwelling processes. In turn, the SST cooling near the storm core exerts influence on the TC intensity. This negative feedback to the TC intensity is cle...

Satellite-Derived Tropical Cyclone Intensity in the North Pacific Ocean Using the Deviation-Angle Variance Technique

The deviation-angle variance technique (DAV-T), whichwas introduced in theNorthAtlantic basin for tropical cyclone (TC) intensity estimation, is adapted for use in the North Pacific Ocean using the ‘‘best-track center’’ application of the DAV. The adaptations include changes in preprocessing for different data sources [Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-East (GOES-E) in the Atlan...
